About Riverside

Riverside was built in 1866 by Tommy Watson an Ambleside School Master as a family home and it still retains that family home feel to it. His family pictures and mortgage Deeds can still be seen in our hallway!

Riverside B&B is just a 10-12 minute stroll into the centre of Ambleside along a quiet lane which gives it the feeling of being in a rural setting away from the hustle and bustle of Ambleside and yet still within easy access of all the restaurants and shops. We provide little torches for your walk in to Ambleside as street lighting has not made it to Under Loughrigg which means that star gazing can be a real delight on a clear night. We have plenty of parking which is a real bonus, as parking is at somewhat of a premium in the centre of town.

“Peace and quiet” in a “relaxing spot” and “tranquil” are some of the most frequent comments guests refer to when staying with us. We have a comfortable guest lounge with a log burning stove, which provides a cosy room to rest weary legs after a winter’s walk. There is plenty of seating outside in the garden and terrace area where you can enjoy a cup of tea or drinks with the gentle sound of the River Rothay in the background during the summer months.

We also have a resident heron called “Clint” who can often be seen standing on the exposed rocks in the River Rothay opposite the breakfast window. We have adopted him as our logo.

Richard & Diney Standen

Richard & Diney met whilst working in London and moved to the Lake District in the summer of 2015. Moving to Ambleside was a quick and easy decision to make with planning taking place in the autumn of 2014. They had to wait until their youngest finished school and moved whilst he was travelling in Asia between school and University (he has forgiven them).

Richard has a degree in Economics and Geography and spent the best part of 25 years in the world of finance before seeing the light and moving to Cumbria.

Diney’s love of the Lake District began during her first catering job working at the Outward Bound Centre in Eskdale. Stints in Scotland were followed with her setting up a catering company and helping coordinate weddings and various functions in the south East. She is also an expert cake maker and chef.

They are more than happy to share their love and enthusiasm for the outdoors and of things to do in the Lake District with guests.

We rely on wonderful staff who keeps Riverside B&B and the rooms clean and tidy. We really could not do it without them. You will see Joanna and Sylvia in the mornings.

Guest experience

Riverside has a “home from home style” with a mix of traditional as well as many mod cons.

We aim to do a couple of things to the best of our ability. Provide you with a comfortable night sleep and set you off for the day with a good breakfast. Everything else is just little extras to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Please let us know if you feel we have fallen short on any of these.
